Easier transfers, new shelters and better lighting are just a few of the features Community Transit is considering as it plans to redevelop the Smokey Point Transit Center. The proposals do not include any public parking.
Specifics about the remodeled transit center, such as the number of bays and the amount of bus layover space, still are being determined.
The idea is to provide a place where passengers safely will be able to transfer between bus routes without having to cross Smokey Point Boulevard or 172nd Street. The new facility would have lighting, security cameras, shelters and bike facilities.
Construction is expected in 2012. The project is scheduled to receive $3.35 million in federal grant funds, which will cover 80 percent of the cost.
The old Smokey Point Transit Center was closed in 2005 after a road development project limited access to the property.
As Smokey Point has grown, so has Community Transit service and ridership. Community Transit operates five routes that connect Smokey Point with downtown Arlington, Marysville, Stanwood, Darrington, Everett Boeing and even Lynnwood.
The former transit center is located just west of Smokey Point Boulevard and north of 172nd Street NE.
