Face coverings no longer required on transit and in transit facilities
In accordance with this week’s statement from the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA), agencies providing transit to riders throughout the Puget Sound region announced that face coverings will no longer be required on transit, at transit facilities or in transit hubs effective today, April 19.
Participating in this announcement are the following agencies:
TSA’s initial face mask requirement went into effect on February 1, 2021. Previous to the TSA requirement, Washington state and local health authorities had issued mandates for face coverings in public spaces.
While masks are no longer required on transit, riders are welcome to continue wearing face coverings if they wish. Please understand it will take time to update all of the announcements, signs, and other communications related to the federal mask mandate. Community Transit will continue to provide masks for riders, if they wish to use one.
The Snohomish Health District and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that people wear masks in indoor public transportation settings at this time. For those who have weakened immune systems or are at increased risk for severe disease, are unvaccinated, or are in contact with someone at high risk, it is encouraged to wear a face mask in crowded indoor settings. Some people may choose to wear a mask out of consideration for those who may be at high risk in public settings, or if they want to further reduce their own risk for any reason.
