Mariner HS Students Make Transit Art

Bus shelter panels will be viewed by 3,000 people daily

Snohomish County, Wash. –Students from Mariner High School’s art program now have their paintings on display at an outdoor gallery that is visited by 3,000 people every weekday.

A dedication ceremony today unveiled 32 student-designed panels for bus shelters at the Mariner Park & Ride in south Everett.

This cooperative effort is Community Transit’s fourth student art project. Past projects have been successfully completed in Lake Stevens, Marysville and Mountlake Terrace.

The panels reflect four Transportation Themes created by the students:

  • Buses in Surrealism
  • Evolution of Art & Transit
  • One Way or Another (Silhouette)
  • Transit Through the Ages

“This is a wonderful community partnership that benefits the students who get their artwork shown to a wider audience, and our bus riders who get some stunning visuals to start their day,” said Community Transit CEO Emmett Heath.

The art shelter program grew out of suggestions on how to prevent graffiti at bus shelters. Those shelters that display art work have significantly less damage than other shelters. Plus, there is more community “ownership” when local residents have a stake in their nearby bus shelters.
