With less than two months until Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) begins lane closures for construction on I-5, it’s not too early to start planning your commute and travel options.

What’s happening?

Starting Monday, July 21, two northbound lanes on I-5 across the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle will close 24/7 for four weeks. That means reduced capacity on one of Seattle’s busiest stretches of highway.

In order to get ready for this construction project, all northbound lanes will be closed between I-90 and NE 45th Street in Seattle from July 18-21. They'll close again at the end of the four-week lane reduction.

Closing lanes on I-5 in the summer is a big deal! Here are some suggestions to start planning:

  • Consider riding transit — it's the best, most reliable way to get around and youth 18 and under ride free.
  • You can expect longer travel times, so consider adjusting when you travel, if you can.
  • Stay informed—find the most up to date info on WSDOT's project website.

Use travel planning tools like WSDOT's app and Community Transit’s Plan My Trip, or  King County Metro and Sound Transit trip planners, or another app such as Google Maps to plan your transit trip. You can also sign up to get digital alerts.
