What to do on the bus instead of scrolling on your phone

Turn your bus time into me-time!

A man sitting on the bus and looking at a newspaper. We’ve all been there: you hop on the bus, find a seat, pull out your phone, and suddenly you’re deep into an endless scroll. Before you know it, you’re at your next stop and you’ve never once looked up from your phone.

Scrolling social media can be fun (especially if you follow Community Transit) but why not try something new? Your bus ride can be the perfect time to accomplish tasks, learn something new, or get in some zen.

What are other riders doing on the bus?

We chatted with some riders at Lynnwood City Center Station to see what they like to do on the bus other than look at their phone.

  • Aiden, who rides Sound Transit Route 512 likes to read on the bus or get his homework done. He’s currently reading The Hunger Games.
  • Mika, who rides Route 112, likes to write in her notepad. She also enjoys showing her bus drivers some appreciation for their work by smiling and saying hi to them.
  • Ricardo, who also rides Sound Transit Route 512, likes listening to music or catching up on schoolwork on his way to the light rail. Right now, he’s been listening to The Marías.

Some ideas to try on the bus

Here are a few fresh ideas to help you mix up your commute routine.

Listen & learn

  • Listen to podcasts or audiobooks. These are great for diving into a story, catching up on news, or learning something new.
  • Try language learning apps. Refresh yourself on that language you took a class on in high school, or try a new language you’ve been curious about!
  • Listen to a new music playlist. The bus is a great time to listen to that new album everyone is talking about.

Read or write

  • Read a book! Whether it’s an eBook or a good ol’ paperback, use your time on the bus to escape into a book. If you’re a Sno-Isle Libraries card holder, you can get eBooks for free through the Libby app.
  • Write or sketch in a journal. Jot down your thoughts, make a gratitude list, or even sketch ideas If you’re a creative writer, challenge yourself to write something before your bus stop!
  • Write a letter. Been meaning to reach out to a friend or family member? Take this time to write them a letter. There are even apps where you can send a postcard right from your phone.

Exercise your brain

  • Try a puzzle or brain game. Think crosswords, Sodoku, logic etc. Get a paper book and a pencil if you really want to stay off your phone.
  • Practice mindfulness. Whether you’re practiced in meditation or using an app on your phone for a guided meditation, it only takes a few minutes to find your zen.
  • Plan ahead. Use your commute to write down future goals, make a shopping list, or update your calendar with important dates.

So, the next time you’re on the bus, try something new and see if you enjoy it! If nothing on this list strikes your fancy, you can always look out the window and enjoy the view. Plan your trip with Community Transit today.
