Community Transit boosts mechanics' pay and incentives in effort to improve transit
New journey mechanics can receive up to $16,100 and earn up to $59 an hour in first year
Snohomish County, Wash. – Community Transit is offering up to $16,100 in hiring incentives as part of a new push to recruit mechanics, who are needed to expand and maintain reliable transit service for Snohomish County residents.
In response to a regional shortage of skilled technicians, the agency is seeking to attract more journey-level mechanics with a $5,000 sign-on bonus and up to $10,000 in relocation assistance. All mechanics are given a $1,100 annual tool and gear allowance.
This recruitment effort directly supports work to implement planned expansions and improve service reliability. Hiring additional maintenance staff will allow more vehicles to be repaired and maintained.
“Mechanics are essential to keeping our buses safe and on the road,” said Ric Ilgenfritz, Community Transit CEO. “We’re focused on doing what it takes to bring in more skilled mechanics to better serve our riders.”
Competitive pay, strong benefits, and career stability
Community Transit offers some of the most competitive mechanic wages in the region, with starting pay ranging from $54.93 to $59.05 per hour depending on shift, plus a guaranteed 40-hour work week, and additional certification pay. That translates to more than $10,000 per month for mechanics who earn $59.05 per hour.
Employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package, including:
State pension with defined monthly payments for life for retirees who have worked at least five years. A person who works 30 years is eligible for pension payments of more than $6,000 per month for life during retirement. See the website for details.
